Mel Pace – President
Hi, I’m Mel and I’m in the 2 nd year of my MEng in Mechanical Engineering. I personally stumbled onto the path to becoming an engineer when my sixth form principal suggested that I take part in the engineering extracurricular program there. Although I’d always been fascinated by space travel and other feats of engineering, I didn’t realise what engineering really was. A lot of people in my area, even now, seem to think it’s just about “fixing things”. Luckily, I decided to give it a go anyway, took part in a nuclear research project
and fell in love with the field. If my college hadn’t offered me this opportunity, who knows when, or if, I would have considered engineering. So, when I heard about the work EVO Outreach does to challenge these preconceptions and inspire an interest in engineering in young people, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I was
equally excited to learn that EVO Volunteering works to ‘engineer a difference’ in the community, first-hand, by helping people tackle engineering challenges as I wanted to become an engineer to make a difference somehow. I’m very proud to be EVO’s president this year and can’t wait to see what we can achieve!

Rutvik Perepa – Treasurer
Hello I am Rutvik currently in 3rd year of Mechanical Engineering. I joined EVO as I wanted to get involved in volunteering that was aligned to my academic interests so it was a natural fit in that regards. I also really wanted to promote STEM and deliver/design/facilitate Engineering activities that made me go Cool as a kid, I do believe every student in school deserves to go at what Engineering stands for and go Wow this is what I want to do, and is why EVO was and is the best fit for me. I am currently the Treasurer in EVO which means I’m in charge of all things financial, and expansions for further funding. In a way I want to be able to contribute to make this society a lot bigger and self sustaining to future handovers

For me, being a part of EVO is all about staying in touch with my curiosity and creativity for science,
while being part of a community. It also allows me to connect with and understand different
perspectives in order to work as a team while reinforcing engineering principles. I look forward to
working on the challenging projects with the new and returning students this year.

Joe Hogg – Outreach
My name is Joe and I’m in my third year of an MEng in Mechanical Engineering. I’ve been promoting
engineering since 2017 when I became a STEM Ambassador during my Year in Industry. Running
events for different ages is a great chance to show off the fantastic and varied things you can do
with engineering, as well as getting a chance to meet new people. I joined EVO to be a part of the
engineering community in Manchester and to encourage more people to engage with engineering as
a career.

As Engineers we learn to solve complex problems, and then expect to get paid for it. To be fair, that’s usually what happens when you graduate into a role at an organization, however EVO is an opportunity for me to do perhaps the only ‘pro bono’ work I will ever get the chance of doing. Projects where I can use the skills and experiences gained to give back to the society is what I am really looking forward to. I am also excited to work with new and returning students who can bring a fresh perspective to the table.
